is experience in canada not real experience these days?

a question here....

over the last year, i have gotten several denials of interviews because the bulk of my professional experience was with a company in Canada, not the USA. A couple of Canadian companies are corporate members of the AMS as well as several CCM's being from Canada. So I am wondering why these companies are easily recognized by the AMS itself; but companies inside and outside the AMS corporate membership (as well as individuals having AMS membership) seem to either discount experience gained in Canada or other countries as lacking what we do here in the USA, if not disallow such experience in its entirety?

is this an ethical practice? is it a legal practice? or is it just plain lack of common geographical knowledge of any boundary conditions above the 49th parallel or near the tropic of cancer?

thanks for whatever opinion the committee offers on this matter.
Forum: Discussions of Enterprise Issues

2007-06-25: Volunteers Sought for New AMS Committee on Uncertainty in Forecasts (ACUF)

On behalf of the American Meteorological Societys (AMS) Commission on the Weather and Climate Enterprise (CWCE), I would like to invite the community to participate in a new Ad Hoc Committee on Uncertainty in Forecasts (ACUF). This committee will reside under the CWCEs Board on Enterprise Communication, which is chaired by Matt Parker, CCM. The charge of the ACUF will be to engage the weather and climate enterprise in identifying a vision of forecast uncertainty characterization and communication as motivated by the 2006 National Research Council report: Completing the Forecast. Characterizing and Communicating Uncertainty for Better Decisions Using Weather and Climate Forecasts. Specifically, the ACUF will serve to identify future paths for more thoroughly addressing forecast uncertainty products, services, and information needs of the Nation. In so doing the ACUF can propose roles and responsibilities of enterprise partners in developing, generating, and providing uncertainty information to the user community. The ACUF will be composed of representatives from government, the private sector, academia, and the user community.

Volunteers to serve on the committee are sought from all sectors. Please contact Matt Parker at matt.parker@srnl.doe.gov or Gary Rasmussen at grasmussen@ametsoc.org if you have an interest in this effort. Please respond no later than 1 August 2007.

Best regards,
George

George L.
2007-06-12: The 2007 AMS Summer Community Meeting Has Been Canceled

Dear Members of the Weather and Climate Enterprise,

The 2007 Summer Community Meeting, scheduled for the first week of August, has been canceled. A significant portion of the meeting was going to be used to gather additional community input to help identify a set of consensus community priorities. The good news is that our Board on Enterprise Communication, in collaboration with the Weather Coalition, has made quicker progress than we anticipated back in January. Now, our long-term goal has transitioned to the creation of a new AMS policy statement on "community priorities".

The AMS Council's Executive Committee recently approved forming the drafting team for this statement, and AMS is issuing a call for volunteers. The statement writing and vetting process will allow the Weather and Climate Enterprise community several opportunities to continue to influence and make input to this process. And, just for everybody's information, we do intend to hold future Summer Community Meetings, just not this particular year.

If you would like to help draft the forthcoming AMS Policy Statement on Community Priorities, then please volunteer.

Best Regards,
George

George L. Frederick
Commissioner
Weather & Climate Enterprise Commission
American Meteorological Society

Phone: 512-864-1784
Fax: 512-864-1784
Mobile: 512-656-9411
E-mail: fredwxman@aol.com
114 Durango Trail
Georgetown TX 78628

Forum: AMS_PSL Archive

2007-05-29: Next NWS Partners/FoS Meeting

NWS Partners and interested NWS staff:

The next Partners/Family of Services Meeting is scheduled for June 20, 2007 in Silver Spring, MD. The meeting will be held in the 2nd floor conference room, NWS HQ, SSMC2, 1325 East West Highway, Silver Spring Maryland.

Please visit the new NWS Partners website to register:

http://apps.weather.gov/partners/index.php

To develop this web site to better serve your needs, we ask for your feedback. Send comments to John Simensky at john.simensky@noaa.gov 301-713-0090 x150 and Ron Gird at ron.gird@noaa.gov 301-713-0090 x154.

The Partners Meeting continues to evolve towards a more interactive format. In cooperation with the Weather and Society Integrated Studies (WAS*IS) Government/Private Sector Weather Partnership Project, led by Melissa Tuttle Carr of The Weather Channel and Kevin Barjenbruch, Warning Coordination Meteorologist of NWSFO Salt Lake City, we are working to make these meetings more collaborative, interactive, and useful for all participants. The first step was taken in June of 2004 when several partners took the podium and provided the NWS with feedback. This approach was used again at the January 2007 Partners Meeting at the AMS in San Antonio, with the inclusion of the aforementioned Partnership Project and therefore, a private sector representative once again on the agenda.

For the upcoming meeting, we would like to continue this trend toward greater interaction. In addition to our NWS updates on products and services , we ask others to submit presentations for consideration! For example, we would like to see:

- NWS presentations regarding products in the earliest stages of development or pre-development

- Partner presentations regarding their use of NWS data and what data, products or services could be improved or implemented by the NWS for the benefit of all sectors

- Partners presentations using the following themes: aviation, dissemination, watch by county, service change, GIS, XML and CAP.

We would like for these presentations to be followed by interactive discussion of how to make the NWS products and services most useful for all partners. The presentations should include specifics. We ask for your submissions by June 1st. The current agenda is available at:

http://apps.weather.gov/partners/PartnersAgendaJune.pdf

Many people from across all sectors, throughout the weather enterprise have asked for a meeting with more interaction. With your submissions and participation, we can make it happen.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Ron Gird and John Simensky
NWS Outreach Team

John Simensky
john.simensky@noaa.gov
301-713-0090 x150

Ron Gird
ron.gird@noaa.gov
301-713-0090 x154

Forum: AMS_PSL Archive

2007-04-26: NWS Partners and Family of Services June Meeting

NWS Partners and interested NWS staff:

As indicated in previous communications, the next Partners/Family of Services Meeting is scheduled for June 20, 2007 in Silver Spring, MD. The meeting will be held in the 2nd floor conference room, NWS HQ, SSMC2, 1325 East West Highway, Silver Spring Maryland.

The procedure to sign up for the meeting has changed. In the past we have directed you to a registration web site. However, this year we are moving in a new direction and ask that you visit the new NWS Partners website at: https://apps.weather.gov/partners/index.php to register. In order to develop this web site to better serve your needs, we ask for your feedback. Send comments to John Simensky at john.simensky@noaa.gov 301-713-0090 ext 150 and Ron Gird at ron.gird@noaa.gov 301-713-0090 ext 154.

The Partners Meeting is continuing to evolve towards a more interactive format.

For the upcoming meeting, wed like to continue this trend toward greater interaction. In addition to NWS updates on products and services , we are asking for others to submit presentations for consideration! For example, wed like to see:
- NWS presentations regarding products in the earliest stages of development or pre-development
- Partner presentations regarding their use of NWS data and what data, products or services could be improved or implemented by the NWS for the benefit of all sectors
- Partners presentations using the following themes: aviation, dissemination, watch by county, service change, GIS, XML and CAP.
Wed like for these presentations to be followed by interactive discussion of how to make the NWS products and services most useful for all partners. The presentations should include specifics. We are asking for your submissions no later than May 15th. We will be publish the final agenda by June 1st.

Many of you across all sectors, throughout the weather enterprise have been asking for a meeting with more interaction. With your submissions and participation, we can make it happen.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Ron Gird and John Simensky
NWS Outreach Team

John Simensky
john.simensky@noaa.gov
301-713-0090 ext 150

Ron Gird
ron.gird@noaa.gov
301-713-0090 ext 154

Forum: AMS_PSL Archive

2007-04-23: NWS Information Service Changes

At the NWS Partners Meeting in January ( San Antonio ), a suggestion was made that NWS provide a capability for email notification of updates to the NWS Database of Information Service Changes:

http://weather.gov/infoservicechanges

In response to this request, NWS is now providing an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed to automatically announce updates to this database. You may subscribe to this RSS feed at the following web address:

http://weather.gov/infoservicechanges

Use of an RSS feed will allow NWS to provide the requested automated announcements without the overhead and privacy issues associated with establishing and maintaining an email service.

General information on use of RSS feeds in NWS can be found at http://weather.gov/rss.

For questions on the RSS feed for updates to the NWS Database of Information Service Changes, please contact me.

Wendy Levine
NOAA/National Weather Service
Phone: 301-713-3380
E-Mail: wendy.levine@noaa.gov

Forum: AMS_PSL Archive

2007-04-23: Spring Update from COMET

Since the last update from COMET in December there have been some big developments on the MetEd Web site...

Required Registration:

In late January, at the request of our sponsors, we implemented a required registration system to access training modules. All materials remain freely available, however; users must now register and log in so that we may better determine who is using our materials. To learn more about the simple, one-time registration process please visit http://www.meted.ucar.edu/mandatory_reg.htm

MetEd en espaol:

In late February we released a Spanish language version of the MetEd Web site! MetEd en espaol provides Spanish language menus for navigation and Spanish versions of all MetEd announcements and product descriptions. MetEd en espaol can be accessed from any MetEd page by clicking the Espaol button to switch to the corresponding page in Spanish. Additionally, MetEd and MetEd en espaol now include a new Spanish Resource page, accessed from the RESOURCES menu. This new page includes links to relevant materials in Spanish, such as bilingual and monolingual dictionaries and glossaries (including specialized topics, such as meteorology and hydrology) and much more. To access MetEd en espaol directly, visit http://www.meted.ucar.edu/index_es.htm

TWO NEW DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES-

Basic Hydrologic Sciences Distance Learning Course:
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/dl_courses/hydrobasic/

Aimed at those who do not have formal training in hydrology, this course is designed to address the needs of non-hydrologists who work with hydrologic data, particularly in flood forecasting. The course is intended to provide an understanding of the complex interactions between the waters of the land and atmosphere and will prepare the student for further study in this area.

Marine Wind and Wave Distance Learning Course:
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/dl_courses/Wind_Wave_Fcsting/

Composed of previously available individual modules, the goal of this complete course is to provide solid foundation knowledge of wind and wave processes with the aim of improving wind and wave forecasting skill and service to customers in the marine environment.

NEW MODULES-

The PBL in Complex Terrain: Part 1
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/norlat/pbl_complexterrain/part1/

Deformation Zone Analysis
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/norlat/sat_features/dz_analysis/

The SPoRT Center - Infusing NASA Technology Into NWS WFO
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/npoess/sport/

An Introduction to Ensemble Streamflow Prediction
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/hydro/ESP/Intro/

Snowmelt Processes
http://www.meted.ucar.edu/hydro/basic/Snowmelt/

And previously announced, Watersheds: Connecting Weather to the Environment
http://meted.ucar.edu/broadcastmet/watershed/

This course provides broadcast meteorologists with instructional materials to help them and their viewers understand watersheds as our environmental home and the relationship between the weather and the health and protection of the environment.

As always, these materials are freely available to everyone, courtesy of our sponsors (NOAA's NWS, NESDIS GOES and NPOESS programs, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, and the Meteorological Service of Canada), as well as special funding from Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, EUMETSAT, and NOAA's International Affairs office.

We welcome any comments, suggestions, or feedback you have on these or any other training offerings available through the MetEd Website.

Sincerely,

Wendy Schreiber-Abshire
COMET Meteorologist
abshire@ucar.edu
303-497-8477
Forum: AMS_PSL Archive
